Surplices & Cassocks

A cassock is the ankle-length black garment worn by clergy, seminarians and servers; a surplice is the white, wide-sleeved garment worn over it. Cassocks come in Roman style with a single row of buttons and Anglican style that closes at the side. Button counts run from nine to the traditional 33. Surplices differ by neckline, pleating, lace trim and length. Fabrics are polyester or poly-cotton broadcloth, and sizing is usually by height with a chest range.

Match the cassock to the tradition. Catholic clergy usually wear a Roman cassock; Episcopal and Anglican clergy often prefer the side-fastening Anglican cut from IvyRobes or Murphy Robes. Check height and chest ranges carefully, as a cassock should clear the floor by a few inches. Surplices from IvyRobes and Trinity Church Supply are sold without a cassock; a longer version helps tall servers. The BLESSUME set pairs a lace surplice with a cassock for choirs. Buy a surplice that reaches at least to the hip.

8 surplices & cassocks

The list includes three white surplices, four black cassocks in Roman and Anglican styles, and one surplice-and-cassock set.

Questions before you order

How is a cassock sized?

Most makers size by height in two-inch bands, for example 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet, with a chest range for each size. Measure height in the shoes normally worn and check the chest. A correctly sized cassock clears the floor by four to six inches.

Roman or Anglican cassock: what is the difference?

A Roman cassock buttons straight down the front, often with 33 buttons, and has a standing collar. An Anglican cassock is double-breasted and fastens at one shoulder and down the side. Both take a removable collar tab or a full clerical collar.

How should a surplice be washed?

Polyester and poly-cotton surplices machine wash on warm. Wash white surplices separately from black cassocks. Hang to dry while still damp so the pleats fall straight, and press with a cool iron only if needed. Lace-trimmed surplices should be hand washed in cold water.

Does a cassock come with the white collar?

Most cassocks in this list include a tab insert for the standing collar, but not a full band collar. Clergy who wear a full Roman collar should buy one separately. Servers normally wear the cassock with no collar insert and a surplice over it.
