Offering Plates & Altar Vases

Offering plates and baskets are passed along the pews for the collection, and altar vases hold the flowers placed near the altar or tabernacle. Plates here are stainless steel in silver, brass or gold finish, 10 to 12 inches across. A felt pad in the center quiets coins. Alternatives are a velvet bag on a wooden handle and lined wicker baskets. Vases are solid brass, with the San Pietro vase at 15 inches including a coated liner.

Count the aisles and order a plate for each usher, matching the finish to the communion trays. Needzo and Kritkin plates come with removable felt pads; the Kritkin set includes four pad colors for the liturgical seasons. Broadman's RemembranceWare plate matches its trays and cup fillers. Choose the velvet bag or wicker baskets where ushers pass the collection hand to hand. Buy altar vases in pairs so the arrangement flanks the cross or tabernacle evenly.

Questions before you order

What size offering plate is standard?

Most church offering plates measure 12 inches across, as the Needzo plate does, with a depth of about 2 inches. The Kritkin plate is slightly smaller at 10 inches. A plate this size passes easily between pews and holds envelopes from a row of about 20 people.

Why do offering plates have felt pads?

The felt pad in the center absorbs the sound of coins dropping on metal and keeps envelopes from sliding. Pads are usually removable so they can be cleaned or changed. Red and burgundy are the common colors; Kritkin supplies blue, green and purple pads as well for seasonal use.

How are stainless and brass tone plates cleaned?

Remove the felt pad, then wipe the plate with a damp cloth and dry it. Silver stainless steel tolerates mild dish soap. Brass tone and gold finishes are plated, so avoid abrasive polish and dishwashers. Felt pads can be brushed or spot cleaned and left to dry flat.

Do brass altar vases need a liner?

Yes, for fresh flowers. Water and plant stems tarnish and pit brass, so a liner of glass, plastic or coated metal protects the vase. The San Pietro vase includes a coated liner. For vases sold without one, use a plastic insert or a glass jar that fits inside the neck.
