Candle accessories are the small tools that keep altar and paschal candles burning cleanly. A brass follower rests on top of a candle and sinks as it burns, keeping the rim even and the wax from running. A candlelighter holds a long wax taper to reach the candles, and a snuffer extinguishes them. Followers here come in 7/8 in, 2 in and 3 in sizes. Tapers are 16 in boxes of 120. Liquid paraffin fuel and a refillable oil candle serve churches using liquid-fuel shells.
Match the follower to the candle. The Needzo 7/8 in follower fits standard altar candles. The 2 in Christian Brands follower fits No. 4 Special paschal candles, and the 3 in follower fits large paschal candles. Either box of tapers from Will & Baumer or Cathedral loads into the 18 in Needzo candlelighter. The 14 1/2 in snuffer reaches most altar candlesticks. The Altar Pure quart of liquid paraffin feeds refillable shells such as the 7/8 x 12 in oil candle. That shell drops into a standard holder.

What does a candle follower do?
A follower is a short brass tube with a flared top that sits on the candle. As the wax melts the follower slides down, keeping a level pool and stopping drips down the side. It also protects the wick from drafts. Followers are used on altar candles and paschal candles alike.
What size follower fits my candles?
The follower's inside diameter must match the candle's diameter. That means 7/8 in for most altar candles, 2 in for a No. 4 Special paschal candle and 3 in for a large one. A loose follower tips and leaks wax; a tight one will not slide. Check the candle box for the exact size.
Which wax tapers fit a brass candlelighter?
Both boxes here are 16 in tapers that feed through a standard church candlelighter. Cathedral lists its tapers at 1/8 in across, and Will & Baumer lists its colorless paraffin tapers at about 16.25 in long. Load the taper through the tube so about an inch shows, and push more through as it burns.
How does a refillable oil candle work?
A refillable candle is a hollow shell with a brass cap and wick. The sacristan fills it with liquid paraffin, such as the Altar Pure quart, and tops it up as needed. The shell keeps a constant height and never drips. The 7/8 x 12 in shell here fits standard altar candle holders.
