Best Catholic Bible: 8 Editions for Study, Prayer and Gifts

Find the best Catholic Bible for you: NABRE, RSV-2CE and Douay-Rheims editions compared for study, large print, daily reading and gifts, with tips.

In short
  • Best overall: the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, the complete RSV-2CE text with study notes and essays.
  • Best for reading the whole Bible: The Great Adventure Catholic Bible, built around the Bible Timeline and a Bible in a Year plan.
  • Closest to Sunday readings: the NABRE, the translation family behind the readings heard at Mass in the United States.
  • Every Catholic Bible has 73 books, including Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch and 1 and 2 Maccabees.
  • Check the copyright page for an imprimatur, the bishop's approval for Catholic use.

Finding the best Catholic Bible starts with a simple question: what will you do with it? A catechist preparing lessons, a grandmother who needs larger type, a teenager receiving Confirmation and a parishioner finally committing to read Scripture cover to cover all need different books, even though every Catholic edition contains the same 73 books.

The difference lies in translation, notes, print size and binding. This guide explains the three translations most American Catholics meet, then compares eight editions, from a full study Bible to a lavishly illustrated Gospels volume, with honest notes on who each one suits.

Our picks

1Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, Old and New Testaments
Best overall

Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, Old and New Testaments

Ignatius Press

For anyone who wants to understand what they read, a study Bible is the most useful single book, and this is the complete Ignatius Catholic Study Bible with both Testaments in one volume. It pairs the RSV-2CE text, a formal and readable translation, with study notes and essays that explain history, language and how passages connect across Scripture and Catholic teaching. The bonded leather cover suits daily handling. Priests, catechists, RCIA/OCIA leaders and serious readers will use it for years.

Why we picked it
  • Complete Old and New Testaments
  • Study notes and essays
  • RSV-2CE text
Keep in mind
  • Large and heavy to carry
2The Great Adventure Catholic Bible, Second Edition
Best for reading the whole Bible

The Great Adventure Catholic Bible, Second Edition

Ascension

Most people who try to read the Bible straight through stall somewhere in Leviticus. Ascension's Great Adventure Catholic Bible organizes the full RSV-2CE text around the Bible Timeline learning system, which shows how the story of salvation unfolds, and includes a Bible in a Year reading plan and maps. It is ideal for parish Bible studies and anyone starting a year-long reading plan.

Why we picked it
  • Bible Timeline learning system
  • Built-in reading plan
  • Maps included
Keep in mind
  • Imitation leather, not genuine
3NABRE Large Print Catholic Bible, Leathersoft, Brown
Best for following Mass readings

NABRE Large Print Catholic Bible, Leathersoft, Brown

Catholic Bible Press

The New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE) is the translation American Catholics will recognize most, since the NAB family underlies the readings heard at Mass in the United States. This 2020 Catholic Bible Press edition uses Comfort Print in a large-print setting with a soft brown Leathersoft cover. It is a good everyday Bible for lectors preparing readings and for families reading the Sunday Gospel together.

Why we picked it
  • Familiar NABRE wording
  • Large Comfort Print type
  • Soft, flexible cover
Keep in mind
  • Fewer notes than a study Bible
4NABRE XL Catholic Bible, Leathersoft, Black
Best extra-large print

NABRE XL Catholic Bible, Leathersoft, Black

Catholic Bible Press

For readers with low vision, even large print can be a strain. The NABRE XL edition from 2022 sets the same text in an extra-large Comfort Print layout with a black Leathersoft cover. It is a thoughtful gift for grandparents, for nursing home ministry and for the reading table in a parish adoration chapel.

Why we picked it
  • Extra-large type
  • NABRE translation
  • Classic black cover
Keep in mind
  • Bulky for travel
5Douay-Rheims Bible, Large Size, Black Leather
Best traditional translation

Douay-Rheims Bible, Large Size, Black Leather

Baronius Press

The Douay-Rheims is the historic English Catholic Bible, translated from the Latin Vulgate, and its formal, older English is loved by readers of traditional devotions and the traditional Latin Mass. Baronius Press binds this large-size edition in flexible black leather with stitched edges, gilt page edges and two ribbons, so it is also one of the most handsome Bibles here.

Why we picked it
  • Genuine leather, stitched edges
  • Gilt edges and two ribbons
  • Traditional language
Keep in mind
  • Older English takes getting used to
6The Word on Fire Bible, Volume I: The Gospels, Hardcover
Best for art and commentary

The Word on Fire Bible, Volume I: The Gospels, Hardcover

Word on Fire

Word on Fire's first volume covers the four Gospels with commentary from Bishop Robert Barron and others, set alongside sacred art. It reads more like a beautiful book you want to pick up than a reference work, which makes it a strong choice for adults returning to the faith or for a Confirmation gift. A leather edition is also available.

Why we picked it
  • Rich commentary
  • Full-color artwork
  • Inviting design
Keep in mind
  • Gospels only, not a full Bible
7The Word on Fire Bible, Volume II: Acts to Revelation
Best companion volume

The Word on Fire Bible, Volume II: Acts to Revelation

Word on Fire

Volume II continues with Acts, the Letters and Revelation in an 841-page hardcover. It adds 120 commentaries from Bishop Barron and more than 275 from over 50 saints, mystics, artists and scholars, including new voices such as Dante, Edith Stein and Catherine of Siena, plus more than 50 artworks and an original painting of Pentecost.

Why we picked it
  • Hundreds of commentaries
  • New voices beyond Volume I
  • Original Pentecost painting
Keep in mind
  • Covers only Acts to Revelation
8Handbook of Prayers, Eighth Edition, Deluxe
Best prayer companion

Handbook of Prayers, Eighth Edition, Deluxe

Midwest Theological Forum

Scripture and prayer go together, and the Handbook of Prayers is a compact companion many Catholics keep next to their Bible. The deluxe eighth edition in imitation leather includes the Order of Mass alongside daily and devotional prayers. It is not a Bible, but it pairs well with any edition above for a gift set.

Why we picked it
  • Order of Mass included
  • Daily and devotional prayers
  • Durable imitation leather cover
Keep in mind
  • Not a Bible translation

How to choose the best Catholic Bible

Start with the canon

A Catholic Bible contains 73 books: 46 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New. The extra Old Testament books, called deuterocanonical, are Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach and Baruch, plus longer forms of Esther and Daniel. Many Protestant Bibles omit them, so look for "Catholic Edition" on the cover.

Pick a translation

  • NABRE: modern American English; the NAB family is the basis of the US Lectionary.
  • RSV-2CE: formal and literary, popular for study and with apologists.
  • Douay-Rheims: traditional English from the Latin Vulgate.

Notes, print and binding

Study notes help beginners and teachers, but add weight. Large print helps older eyes. Leather and Leathersoft covers lie flat and handle daily use; hardcovers suit shelves and gifts.

Good to know Church law asks that editions of Scripture for Catholics be approved by Church authority (canon 825). Look for an imprimatur or a note of approval on the copyright page.

Which Bible is best for which reader?

  • Catechists and study groups: Ignatius Catholic Study Bible or Great Adventure.
  • Lectors: NABRE, to match the wording used at Mass.
  • Older readers: NABRE Large Print or XL.
  • Confirmation or RCIA/OCIA gifts: Word on Fire Gospels or a Great Adventure Bible.
  • Traditional devotion: Douay-Rheims.

How we chose

We compared every title in our Catholic Bibles category using the publishers' descriptions: translation, completeness, notes, print size and binding. We chose one Bible for each common need instead of listing the same edition in several colors, and added one prayer book from our prayer books range because readers so often ask for a companion. We did not rank translations by preference; all three are used by faithful Catholics.

Tips for reading and caring for your Bible

  1. Use the ribbons: one for your reading plan, one for the Sunday Gospel.
  2. Read the coming Sunday's readings during the week to hear them more deeply at Mass.
  3. Keep leather Bibles away from heat and direct sun; a soft cloth removes hand oils.
  4. Write the date of a sacrament or gift on the presentation page.
  5. Have your Bible blessed by a priest if you wish; it is a simple and lovely custom.
