Prayer Books

Catholic prayer books collect daily prayers, the Order of Mass, devotions, litanies and preparation for the sacraments in one portable volume. The books here range from the comprehensive Manual of Prayers and Handbook of Prayers from Midwest Theological Forum to the small Pieta Prayer Book booklet. Magnificat companions cover adoration and the rosary. They differ in binding (imitation leather, hardcover, paperback, pamphlet), type size, page count and whether they include the Order of Mass in Latin and English.

A seminarian or priest wants the Manual of Prayers; a parishioner who attends daily Mass is usually better served by the Handbook of Prayers, which is also sold in large print. Blessed Be God reprints the 1925 collection for those who prefer older devotions. The Pieta booklet is cheap enough to give away, and the five-pack is meant for that. An adoration chapel should keep a few Magnificat Adoration Companions in the pews. Rosary groups can use the Rosary Companion or the 54-day novena guide.

Questions before you order

What is the difference between the Manual of Prayers and the Handbook of Prayers?

Both are from Midwest Theological Forum. The Handbook of Prayers is the shorter book for laypeople and includes the Order of Mass with devotions. The Manual of Prayers is longer and was prepared for seminarians. It has fuller texts for the sacraments, examination of conscience and the Church's prayers in Latin and English.

Is there a large-print prayer book?

Yes. The Handbook of Prayers is published in a large-print hardcover edition. The Pieta Prayer Book comes in a green large-print version alongside the standard small booklet. Both keep the same prayers as the regular editions with larger type and more white space.

Do prayer books need an imprimatur?

Books of prayers for Catholic use are normally published with an imprimatur. That is the bishop's declaration that nothing in the text contradicts Catholic teaching. The Midwest Theological Forum books carry one; check the copyright page of any reprint or small-press title before buying in bulk for a parish.

What is in the Pieta Prayer Book?

The Pieta Prayer Book is a small booklet of traditional prayers, including the Fifteen Prayers of St. Bridget, prayers to the Sacred Heart, novenas and prayers for the dying. It has been distributed by Miraculous Lady of Roses for decades and is sold singly or in packs for parish distribution.
