Crucifixes

A wall crucifix hangs in the sanctuary, the sacristy, the confessional, the parish office and every classroom. The crucifixes here range from 16 to 36 in tall. Some are a traditional cross with a sculpted corpus, in walnut, wood or stone resin. Others reproduce the San Damiano icon cross associated with St. Francis, either as a painted wooden panel or in sculpted resin relief.

Match the size to the wall and the viewing distance. A 16 to 18 in crucifix suits a classroom, office or small sacristy. The 24 in walnut, wooden and stone-resin crosses fit a chapel or meeting room wall. The 36 in Needzo San Damiano is sized for a nave or large chapel. For a Franciscan parish or retreat house, the Gerffert and Joseph's Studio San Damiano crosses carry the full icon.

Questions before you order

What size crucifix is right for a chapel wall?

For a chapel or meeting room, 24 in is the common size and reads from across the room. A nave or sanctuary wall needs 36 in or larger. Classrooms, offices and confessionals are served by 16 to 18 in crucifixes mounted at eye level.

How are these crucifixes mounted?

Most come with a hook or hanger on the back and hang from a single screw or picture hook. Heavier pieces, such as the 24 in walnut cross or the 36 in San Damiano, need a wall stud. Otherwise use a wall anchor rated well above the crucifix weight.

What is the difference between a corpus crucifix and a San Damiano cross?

A corpus crucifix is a plain cross with a sculpted figure of Christ. The San Damiano cross is a painted icon, with Christ surrounded by Mary, John, the Centurion and angels, copied from the 12th-century cross St. Francis prayed before in Assisi.

How should a wooden or resin crucifix be cleaned?

Dust with a soft, dry cloth or brush, working around the corpus. Wood can take a light wipe with a barely damp cloth; avoid furniture polish on painted corpus figures. Stone-resin crosses can be wiped with mild soap and water and dried at once.
